A BIT ABOUT ME

Peggy pic edited_edited.jpg

I was born and raised in the beautiful Caribbean country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Thanks to my mom, I grew up with a deep love of books. Ever since I was a child, I loved scribbling verses and writing stories. That passion has grown over the years to become a central part of my life.
I'm a journalist, poet, novelist and, yes, still a scribbler. My latest book, the young adult historical fiction title SHAPE OF A WARRIOR, is my first novel.
I'd like to think that my writing is informed by my extensive travels and my interest in cultures all over the world.
I'm currently based in Taiwan, a fascinating country that has become my second home.

SHAPE OF A WARRIOR

October 2020

On the island of Hiroon, a Kalina girl rescues and helps hide a strange-looking boy who she thinks is a captive from a nearby village. But he’s not.

For Yurubi, who dreams of boat building, Aloo grows to become a friend like no other, although he’s terrified of the sea. Together, they secretly explore the forest, learn to make weapons, play wrestling games, hunt, and build small river boats. But their world of adventure crumbles when Aloo is forced out of hiding and as Yurubi’s unwomanly skills become apparent. They must struggle against their anguish and fears to fight for a place on an island that’s home to some of the most fearsome warriors on Earth.

HONEY AND LIME

June 12, 2006

FROM THE BLURB ON THE BACK COVER: The themes are universal - love, loss, resistance, hope. The voice is distinctly Caribbean. The result is a soulful collection laced with power. These poems reflect the writer's deep engagement with her society and her skill in peeling away its layers to expose the core. This is a distillation of everyday human experience, related in language that ranges from stark simplicity to intricate imagery. Throughout the book, the poet's touch is delicate but sure.

My three collections of poetry, so far.

Some of the poems in the first book, Echoes from a Lonely Nightwatch, date back to my teenage years. But guess what, those are the ones the editors in New Zealand chose for inclusion in the education resource series A River of Stories.

I represented my country at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Wait, hold the laughter. Not on the track -- my running days are long gone -- but in BBC Scotland's Poetry Postcard series.

My poems have been flying around the world, from the Caribbean to the U.K and as far as New Zealand. These are some of the anthologies in which they can be found.
